Donna Balsan COLLECTION

Donna McLeod Balsan was trained at NYU Tisch School of Arts in 1980. She worked in the textile industry in NYC. Then married French independent film producer, Humbert Balsan and moved to France where she lived for the next 25 years. She was trained at Institut Superior de Peinture Decoratif/ Paris, specializing in Trompe l’oeil, faux marbre/bois, patinas and murals. She worked on decorative painting projects all-over France, US and Europe in hotels, chateaux, private homes and apartments and film sets. She moved to Aix en Provence in 1995 where she was deeply influenced by fauve landscapes of painters working in Colliore (South of France) in the beginning of the 20th C. She studied at L’Atelier Libre with a Paris Beaux Art trained painter in Aix en Provence. She has exhibited in Aix en Provence and the United States. The colors, vibrancy and texture of the pastels show the strong influence of Provence in Donna's work.

ANNE MARIE BELLI

Untitled

$950

“Working in watercolor, I have pursued different themes over the years. Initially, I created colorful flower studies, using a powerful wet-in-wet format. I was particularly impressed by Emil Nolde’s German Expressionist flower works, bolstered by his status as one of Hitler’s Generate artists. At one point, I noticed that the shadows my floral compositions were casting were more interesting than my recreations of them. This developed into a series of delicate, ethereal compositions in indigo. I experimented with various sizes of paper, working with positive and negative shapes. Simultaneously, I have been sketching figurative sculpture at the Metropolitan Museum, often in the company of artist friends. From those efforts, I have been teaching myself to paint portrait busts. I am particularly inspired by Francesco Clemente and his tour de force use of watercolor in portraiture.”

SARA J. BEAZLEY

Printmaking
2010
29.9 “ W x 22” H x 0.1” D

$4,200

Sara J Beazley is a London-based printmaker whose refined style has garnered international attention. Marrying old with new, she employs traditional printing techniques such as etching, dry point, embossing and silkscreen printing to produce contemporary and original images. Her works capture a delicacy and subtle beauty of line, pattern and palette. Juxtaposing architectural drawings or photographs with fine patterned fabrics and elements of the figure, Sara's work is graceful and sensitive. The carefully composed layers of ink amalgamate to produce remarkably sophisticated images, close inspection reveals many "ghost like" images and tracings. Adopting motifs from vintage postcards, calligraphy and postage stamps found in antique markets in Asia and Europe, Sara recaptures a historical setting with a contemporary sensibility.

ELAINE HOLIEN

Elaine Holien first came to Taos in the summer of 1967 to study anthropology at the D.H. Lawrence Field School. She met her future husband on this initial trip, returned to New York to finish her studies, then finally returned to New Mexico to marry Tom Holien. Her first job was documenting the Kachina collection in watercolor renderings at the Wheelwright Museum. Through the years Elaine’s work has evolved, but always painting the landscape. A painter in New Mexico for 35 years, Elaine Holien is one of New Mexico’s premier landscape painters. Her paintings are vibrant in color and focus on simplifying the landscape. She selects elements that depict the essence of a place. One of her favorite locations to paint is the region of Ghost Ranch and Abiquiu.
